Valkyria Chronicles is a Revolutionary RPG released exclusively on the PS3, The first notable aspect of this game is that it is sega's best effort in a long time, and its truly the first time they've broken new ground with the rpg genre since the Master System.
The story follows the exploits of Commander Welkin, leader of the seventh Galian militia platoon, fighting in second europen war a conflict heavily inspired by WW1 and his second in command Alicia both fighting to reclaim their home against the tyrannical empire.
I Story-While seemingly rather typical this games story manages to break the mold rather fast, And manages to create a gripping yet fantastic story. The kind of which has been missing in modern games. With the over-saturation of western RPG's this Gen its nice to get something different, yet familiar.
II Graphics- Cell shaded graphics is really the only way to get the Manga/Anime style to look good, and this game goes well beyond good with the way the graphics engine renders the shaded like a oil painting, Creating stunning graphics you could sometimes swear was done on paper. the only complaint is that some of the background objects are oddly low res, and the same can be said about the enemy solder models which tend to only look great in cut-scenes. the game goes out of its way to give you a "comic book" look, by making onscreen sound effects like RATTA RATTA when guns fire.
III Gameplay- The only part that matters really in any game is how it plays and I have to say this game is funner than golden violin duel with the devil. in combat you are given a 3D map which represents the battle field, showing allies and enemy alike, you have a limited number of actions per turn. You can use actions on ally movement or orders, orders are basically buffs that can help turn the tide of a losing battle or ensure a total victory in a winning one. when you select an ally the game enters a quasi action mode where you have full control of the chosen character (which can be any number of character classes as well as a tank) were you can move for a limited amount of time(until your movement gauge runs out) while moving the enemy will automatically attack prompting you to keep a distance.
When you decide to attack you must aim cross hairs at the enemy, and when the position is confirmed chance takes over as the CPU automatically fires the gun, if an enemy survives they can make a rather deadly counter attack so it pays to be cautious.
IV Other- The game is layed out in book form where you pick events from each chapter, with some being optional. you can choose from 50 different characters to put in your platoon, each having there own personality highlighted by there comments in battle as well as there own individual strengths an weaknesses. If one of these characters happens to die in battle however they are gone for good and must be replaced.
For a while the PS3 was dry on rpgs making this games release a necessity, but since its release severly Xbox rpgs have been ported over including the upcoming Star Ocean 3 International verson (only the second recut released in the US by Square Enix)
If last year was any sign (with games like this) than the ps3 is finally showing why it deserves to be on top this gen.
{for those who NEED a numerical score (which i don't like) I'd give this a 9/10]
